At our recent general meeting, the homeowners voted to support the City of Wimberley in its effort to become “Dark Sky Certified”. We resolved to do our part to lower light pollution and preserve the brilliance of our night sky.
The International Dark Sky Association has a program to award towns and communities with a Dark Sky status when they use lighting that preserves the night sky.
The FSA program certifies outdoor lighting fixtures that minimize glare, reduce light trespass and protect the night sky.Thousands of products and more than one hundred manufacturers have already been approved under the FSA program.
They also help parks, nature reserves and similar sites with lighting management plans and provide eco-friendly lighting options for free or at substantially discounted prices.
What We Need To Do
Don’t install any outdoor lighting that directs upwards into the sky.
If you have large outdoor lights, keep them off or replace them with smaller, down facing lighting.
Where ever possible put your outdoor lighting on motion detectors.
Talk to your neighbors about leaving outdoor lighting off at night or putting their lighting on a motion detector.
Lets Help the Wimberley Valley keep its night sky visible!
